چکیده

We present a method for relevance sensitive nonmonotonic inference from belief sequences which incorporates insights pertaining to prioritized inference and relevance sensitive, inconsistency tolerant belief revision. Our model uses a finite, logically open sequence of propositional formulas as a representation for beliefs and defines a notion of inference from maxiconsistent subsets of formulas guided by two orderings: a temporal sequencing and an ordering based on relevance relations between the conclusion and formulas in the sequence. The relevance relations are ternary (using context as a parameter) as opposed to standard binary axiomatizations. The inference operation thus defined easily handles iterated revision by maintaining a revision history, blocks the derivation of inconsistent answers from a possibly inconsistent sequence and maintains the distinction between explicit and implicit beliefs. In doing so, it provides a finitely presented formalism and a plausible model of reasoning for auto-

Exploiting Non-monotonic Influences in Qualitative Belief Networks

In a qualitative belief network, dependences between variables are indicated by qualitative signs. These signs serve to model monotonic probabilistic relationships only: non-monotonic relationships between variables are modelled as lack of information. In this paper, we propose to include information about non-monotonic probabilistic influences between variables explicitly in a qualitative beli...

Reasoning about Perception

This paper focuses on the uncouscious mechanisms underlying the process of acquisition of belief through perception. We outlines the basics of a formal theory of belief that is sensitive to the way in which beliefs are formed through perception. The process of formation of beliefs involves a form of inference that is defeasible. We represent this kind of inference by means of well-known techniq...

A Process Theory of Non-monotonic Inference

Artificial Intelligence needs a formal theory of the process of non-monotonic reasoning. Ideally, such a theory would decide, for every proposition and state of the process, whether the program should believe the proposition in that state, or remain agnostic. Without non-monotonic inference rules, non-monotonic inferences cannot be explained in the same relational, rule-based fashion as other i...

Belief Contraction as Nonmonotonic Inference

A notion of an epistemic state is introduced as a generalization of common representations suggested for belief change. Based on it, we deene a new kind of nonmonotonic inference relation corresponding to belief contractions. A number of representation results is established, covering both traditional AGM contractions and contractions that do not satisfy recovery.
